CCP Notice to Fruit Juice Manufacturers
Six famous fruit juice manufacturers are given Show Cause Notice by the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) for their deceptive marketing practices and misleading consumers according to the section 10 of the Competition Act 2010.
Names and Claims of the 6 Juice Manufacturers
- On the product of ‘Nestle Fruita Vitals Orange Juice’, Nestle Pakistan Limited is claiming “100% Orange Juice”.
- On the packaging of ‘All Pure’, there is printing of “Rich in Vitamins” and “100% Juice” by Shezan International Limited.
- The slogan of “100% Pure” is used on the packaging of juice brand ‘Fruiten’ by Citropak Limited.
- The packaging of fruit juice ‘Topix’ has the writings of “Pure Fruit juice” and “Mango 100%” by A.F. International.
- The packaging of Sunland Foods fruit juice ‘Fruit Farm’ has printing of “Rich in Vitamin C”, “Natural Flavors, No Artificial Colors”, “100% Pure Guava Juice” and “100% Pure Mango Juice”.
- The fruit juice of Maaher Food Industries, ‘Country’, has labeling of “From 100% Pure Fruits”.
Findings by CCP
CCP conducted the inquiry after it received complaints that several fruit manufacturing companies are making claims about providing 100% pure fruit juices that are rich in vitamins and free from colors, preservatives and added sugar.
These claims were printed without justification that was not only violating section 10 of the Competition Act by delivering misleading information to consumers but also by harming business interests of the competitors.
It was found after the inquiry that all the six companies mentioned above were making unjustifiable claims about their products. On the recommendations of the inquiry committee, show cause notice has been served on the companies for violation of section 10 of the Competition Act.
CCP has recently directed in its order that advertising claims must be based on reliable scientific evidence and it is especially important if it is for health product.
