A new stand-alone app called Rooms has been launched by the Creative Labs division of Facebook. The inspiration of this app has been taken from different familiar things including communities, forums and IRC chat rooms.
You can create a new room or join an existing one after downloading the app. The focus of these rooms is based on the set of events, topics and ideas. It means you can have a room for the latest Game of Thrones episode, your favorite cricket club or your batch in the university. You can customize the settings, color schemes and descriptions of a particular room. The QR code can be shared among friends or for public which is used for adding people to the room.
An interesting thing is that you don’t have to use your real name in the Rooms app. There is also option to select different usernames in every room.
It is quite exciting to use QR codes. Project manager Josh Miller told about the reason for choosing them instead of links. He said that the early web mainly contains linking but these are not easy on mobile. Photos are easiest on the phones as similar to the easy use of links on web.
It is simple to create a QR code and online post it. Then you can share it in social media, emails or print it. Everyone is encouraged to open the QR code image in the Rooms app if he wants to join the room.
There are also few community guidelines including age limit, no abusive and no hate speech.
We hope that an Android version will start soon but there is no official statement about this.
