Elderly in Japan commits small crimes to enter jails

+

Jails are becoming ‘nursing home’ in Japan. Poor and homeless old people now come to jail after committing small crimes where they get food and medical care.

The crime rate in elderly people is increasing in Japan. Homeless and poor old people commit small crimes like theft etc. so that they can be taken to jails or transformation centers where they have to work but they get residence and food also.

The administration of jails is worried about this situation because jails are now looking like ‘reformation centers’. Extra care also has to be taken for elderly people. The Japanese government has allocated 60 million yen to increase the nursing staff in jails.
