Karachi has been ranked as the world’s 6th worst city to live in by the 2017 Global Liveability Report and the city retains this position for two consecutive years.

This report will not surprise most of the people living in Karachi but it raises questions on the claims of ‘improvement’ in the situation of Karachi. For the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Liveability Index, 140 cities in the world were ranked on the basis of stability, healthcare, culture & environment, education and infrastructure.

But Citizens-Police Liaison Committee Chief Zubair Habib says that the ranking is made on perception as the situation has improved which is evident with the declining rate of organized crimes in the city. But he admitted that Karachi Police is facing problem of less staff which is a hindrance for having investigation and forensic teams only for profile cases but not for all cases. He demanded that minimum number of police members should be at least 50,000 to control crimes in the city.

Karachi’s mayor Wasim Akhtar says that issues of the city are increasing because no one wants to attend the problems. Influx of population is creating problems while sewerage system should be given more importance as compared to construction of new roads. After 18th Amendment, Sindh govt. is in full control of the city while he is not allowed to start a project of worth more than Rs. 20 million and his only duty is to pay salaries and pensions. All the responsibilities of local government from water to garbage collection have been taken by the provincial government through notifications. The mayor said he even can’t manage 13 hospitals under his command due to lack of fund and power.

But there are private institutes like the Indus Hospital, Aga Khan University Hospital, the Sindh Institute of Urology & Transplantation and several private schools that are trying to fill the gap created by the negligence of government and public institutes.
