According to the data of 6th Population & Housing Census 2017, the population of 10 major cities of Pakistan has increased by 74.4% as compared to the last census of 1998. According to the 19998 census, the combined population of these ten major cities of Pakistan was 23,475,067 which has now increased to 40,956,232 persons.

This current 6th census shows that the population of Karachi has increased from 9.339 million in 1998 to 14.91 million in 2017. Lahore is the 2nd most populous city and its population has increased to 11.126 million in 2017 from the previous 5.143 million in 2008. Faisalabad is 3rd in this list with population growth of 2.008 million in 1998 to 3.203 million in 2017. As compared to 1.409 million population in 1998, the population of Rawalpindi has now grown up to 2.098 in 2017.

But results of the census have been rejected by the Sindh Govt. The ruling party PPP (Pakistan People’s Party) has announced to call the APC (all parties conference) on this issue. Provincial Minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro said in a statement on Monday that the population of Sindh is reduced by the Federal Govt. He said that the purpose of this conspiracy is to reduce national and provincial assembly seats and also the share of Sindh in National Finance Commission. He added that this will not be accepted by Sindh Govt.

The results show that share of Sindh in the total population remained stable at 23% with total population of 47.886 million people. It is also the most urbanized province with the urban population of 52.02% that could result in the change in urban-rural quotas of jobs and provincial assembly seats.
