The Council of Islamic Ideology seems to go in favor of the recently proposed bill ‘Child Marriage Restraint Bill’. It states that the people of this country are allowed to carry out the nikkah at any age but the ‘rukhsati’ (departure of the bride to the house of groom) will be done when the age of the girl will become at least 18 years.
The Senate Standing Committee passed the bill last year in order to lower down the ratio of the early marriages in the country. Senator Sehar Kamran moved the bill on the floor of the upper house of the parliament and from there it was referred to Council of Islamic Ideology for further consideration. CII was bound to give the final report on the matter within three weeks but after the delay of two months, the council did not give the conclusive decision on the bill because of the sensitive and complex nature of the issue.

The chairman of CII, Dr Qibla Ayaz said that this bill is still under the consideration of the members of the council and some serious efforts have been made to reach to the logical conclusion about the exact minimum age for the marriage.

The chairman of the standing committee said the government of Pakistan wants to consider all laws that are followed and the council is said to look deeply into the norms and rules, which are followed by the international Islamic scholars in other Muslim countries regarding minimum age of the girl for marriage. The Chairman of CII said that the members of the committee will submit the final report before him on Thursday.
