Pakistan Bureau of Statistics has issued the census summary yesterday according to which the current population of Pakistan is 207.7 million. The results say that 207,774,520 is the total Pakistani population at the end of June 2017.

Punjab is the most populous province with more than 110 million people and it is followed by Sindh with over 47 million population. KPK is at 3rd with 30 million residents while Balochistan’s population is around 12 million. There are 2 million people in Islamabad.

According to PBS, the data is presented as provisional summary and the detailed census report will be issued later. The summary shows that the increase of population remains 57% and 146.6% since the year 1998 and 1981 respectively.

At national, Punjab and Sindh level, the population growth has reduced but the rate increased in FATA and the provinces of Balochistan and KPK. You can view the trend of urbanization in Pakistan in the chart given below.

In 1981, Pakistan’s population was just 84 million and it grew in 1998 to 132 million and now it has reached to 207.7 million in 2017.

The urban share in 1981 was 28.3% which has now grown to 36.38% in 2017. This shows a growing trend of urban population in all the provinces with a slightly higher increase rate in Punjab province.

In contrast, the urban population rate in the ICT has decreased significantly from 65.72% in the last census to 50.58% in 2017 which shows increase population rate in rural areas. Sindh is the most urbanized among all the provinces as the urban areas of the province has 52.02% of population.
