Pakistan Railway Get 20 Diesel Electric Trains

Pakistan Railways finalized the tender for procurement of 20 diesel electric locomotives. It issued the Letter of Intent (LOI) in favor of M/S General Electric USA to make the improvements in the services.

The parliamentary secretary for railways informed the national assembly that Pakistan railways imported 55 D.E locomotives of 4000 HP from General Electric (GE) USA and 32 locomotives have been received by railway in Pakistan and there are 23 more locomotives, which are in transit and it is expected that they will also reach to Pakistan by end of July 2017. There are 5 locomotives of 3000 HP, which have been manufactured and assembled in Pakistan by Risalpur Locomotive factory during last five years.

It is also stated that the double line track on Karachi to Peshawar main line is existed on Karachi to Lodhran and from Lahore to Raiwind, which were made at the time of independence. Now they have decided to double the track between Lodhran-Raiwind and it was formally opened for traffic on 09 January 2016. The double of the track from Shahdara to Peshawar in included in the up-gradation of the main line project under CPEC.

There are some of the important cities, which are present on the track and they are making double under this project:

  • Gujranwala
  • Wazirabad
  • Gujrat
  • Lalamusa
  • Jhelum
  • Rawalpindi
  • Attock
  • Nowshera
  • Peshawar

The project will be completed in five years from 2017 to 2021after signing of the inter-governmental framework agreement.

The parliamentary secretary on railway also informed that Pakistan railways did not privatize any passenger train since 2012 and Pakistan railway has outsourced commercial management of four trains under the public private partnership to private sector under the rule of PPRA-rules, 2004 through the fair, competitive and transparent bidding process.

Pakistan railways get the revenue of Rs.4416.842 million per annum of Rs.368.070 million per month from four trains, which was earlier the revenue of Rs.1761 million.
