Indian tennis-star Sania Mirza said that the fear of having dark color is one of the reasons that women in India don’t want to play tennis. White color is given preference in Subcontinent.

While giving interview to British media, Indian tennis queen Sania Mirza says that close relatives were also worried on her play. On replying a question that whether the fear of dark color in sun is a reason due to which Indian girls don’t play tennis, Sania said that there are different opinions in India that what women should do and don’t. One of the reasons that women are not present in tennis and golf is the fear of dark color but you also have to stay abroad and sacrifice many things.

She said her uncle, aunt and cousins were worried that how her marriage would take place if the color changed to dark. This fear is in their culture. She said that initially everyone discourage her on playing tennis but when she won 2003 junior Wimbledon title then people apologized her. She added that many things changed in last 20 years but basics are still same. Tennis star said that if a woman wants to become professional player then there’s nothing about religion or cast but the culture of subcontinent does play a part.

Sania started a tennis academy in Indian city Hyderabad. It should be remembered that she’s married to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.
