Shab-e-Meraj or night of Meraj is a holy and sacred night for Muslims. This blessed night is commemorated on 27th of Rajab every year. The reason for the blessing of this night is that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) went initially from Makkah to Masjid-al-Aqsa (known as Isra) and from there to heaven (called Meraj) on that night to meet Allah. There on heaven, he (PBUH) received the gift of 5 prayers for Muslims and also saw few signs of Allah. The occasion of Isra and Meraj is discussed in the Holy Quran in Chapter 17.
This year in 2016, Shab-r-Meraj will be held on 5thMay 2016 in Pakistan. Many people visit the graves and pray for their deceased relatives on that night as they expect their prayers for forgiveness are most likely to be accepted on that blessed night. The mosques are illuminated on that night also to observe this night with religious fervor.
