SoftBank to buy robot maker Boston Dynamics

On Thursday, Japanese SoftBank Group announced that it is purchasing Boston Dynamics from Google’s parent organization Alphabet while the company is animal-based robot maker. The bank didn’t tell about financial details but it shows that interest of the bank in robotics.

Masayoshi Son, chief executive SoftBank, said in a release that they can’t solve several issues today only with human capabilities and while role will be played by smart robotics in the next stage of information revolution. It is also told in the release that SoftBank will also purchase Schaft, Japanese bipedal robotics company, from Alphabet according to this deal.

Chief Executive Boston Dynamics, Marc Raibert, said in the statement that they also want to use advanced technology for benefit of humanity like SoftBank and they want to push the boundaries of advanced robots while working with SoftBank.

 

There is a human-shaped robot “Pepper” purchased by SoftBank that can work as an assistant while there are also four-legged machines in the Boston Dynamics with names like “Wild Cat” and “Big Dog”. A humanoid “Atlas” by Boston Dynamics uses its ‘balance and whole body skills’.

In 2013, Boston Dynamics was purchased by Alphabet while the company was trying to sell the robot maker since past one year.
