Senator Haseeb Khan said that a law is passed to stop the Thalassemia in the Sindh province. He said that implementation of this law has been done across the province and now the people will have to follow it.

The department has issued the necessary declaration under which the bride and groom will have to carry out their Thalassemia test before their wedding compulsorily and the wedding registrar or nikkah khawan has to complete a form after watching the test before conducting the wedlock. If it is not done, then their wedlock will not be registered and they will have to face the punishment of three months imprisonment and fine of 50 thousands rupees. He addressed with the press conference in Karachi press club and said that he submitted the bill in the national assembly on 19 October 2004 on the plain paper but it could not get the attention. Then he presented the bill in the national assembly on 14 April 2009 but it was opposed. However, he continued his efforts and he got approved this bill from the governor of Sindh on 19 May 2013 and an ordinance was issued. Then the chief minister of Sindh got it approved from the Sindh Assembly on 19 September 2013 but it was not implemented after passing of 4 years.

Now the concerned department has issued the declaration to act upon this act and through this act, the bride and groom will have to give a legal consent to the registered nikkah registrar on the prescribed form and if it is avoided then the legal action can be initiated. It is important to note that 5000 children are born every year with the Thalassemia disease in Pakistan and there are 100,000 children affected by this disease in Pakistan. It is also noted that there are about one crore people, who are suffered from Thalassemia minor.

The patients of Thalassemia minor appeared healthy but if they are married with Thalassemia minor then the Thalassemia major children are born. He said that with the help of the Thalassemia test before wedding, the increasing ratio of this disease can be controlled. He also requested to the parents that there is no harm in getting the test done and it can help to save the children from this disease.
