Windows Smart Phone oversells iOS in Latin America

Windows Phone shipments in Latin American have surpassed those of the Apple iPhone family, according to IDC’s Mobile Tracker report for Q3 2013. This is the first case where Microsoft platform has climbed to second place over an entire continent and it continues its great performance in the region.

Windows Phone has achieved a quarterly growth of 20% for each of the last three quarters, according to IDC’s report which tracks smartphone shipments. For the OS, year-on-year growth stands at the impressive 156%.
In Chile, Colombia, Peru, Mexico and the region, Windows Phone is in fact the second most popular mobile. The quarter-over-quarter growth is 50% in Chile alone, which is the highest around.

Oliver Flores, Regional Manager for Mobile Phones at IDC Latin America says that the major success of Windows Phone is delivering smartphones with full features in low cost devices of Latin America market. Low range devices like Nokia Lumia 520 offer a complete experience for the users that have just begun their journey in the smartphone world.

Windows Phone takes 3.6% of the market for Q3 2013 on a global scale with nearly 9 million smartphones running the OS shipped, according to Gartner. Compared to the same quarter in 2012, that’s a significant jump, when OS with 3.9 million units shipped, held a market share of 2.3%.
