Li-Fi Technology Uses LED Bulbs to Connect Internet Connection

+

An innovative way of gaining access to the Digital World of Internet using the signals sent through the Light Bulb instead of Radio Waves as in Wi-Fi, has been successfully developed and experimented by a team of Chinese experts and specialists. They named it Li-Fi.

In the frequency range between 2.4 and 2.483 GHz, Wi-Fi operates. In 2011, Herald Haas had first used Li-Fi in his TED Global talk on Visible Light Communication.

Under the principle that light can be used to carry signals as an alternative to traditional radio frequencies, the Li-Fi technology operates. As long as there is no blockage of any kind between a Computer and the Light source, it keeps serving.

The IT professor at Shanghai’s Fudan University and leader of Li-Fi research team, Chi Nan, said that an internet connection for four Electronic Gadgets may be established by One-Watt LED Light Bulb, at once. The data rate of 150Mbps can be produced by a light bulb with embedded microchips. She also said that for Wireless Signal Transmission, the current tools are less efficient and expensive.

She explained that for strengthening the signals of cell phones, millions of base stations have been established but most energy is consumed for their cooling systems. Only five percent is the energy utilization rate.

Two thirds of the total population in today’s world does not have internet access and over one billion people combined don’t have this facility in places like Pakistan, China and India. It will not be less than a dream comes true, if gaining access to the internet by just turning on the light bulb.

Chi says that, there is an Internet signal wherever there is a LED light bulb. There will be no signal when turn off the light.

But according to experts, there is a long way to go to make Li-Fi a commercial success and the development of series of key related pieces of technology, including light communication controls, microchip design and manufacturing, is still in an experimental period.

Though the technology is still in experimental period but at the China International Industry Fair, Netizens should be excited to view 10 sample Li-Fi kits that will be on display. This fair will kick off on 5th Nov in Shanghai.
