The good news for Male and Female Employees whether they are working in a public sector or private sector organizations in federal territory is that they will be given paid Paternity and Maternity leaves of 3 and 6 months respectively. The Maternity and Paternity Leave Bill, 2018 passed in senate in this regard. The bill was proposed by the PPP’s Quratulain Marri in the Parliament. In the senate the bill got majority but the ruling party senators, PTI opposed the bill. If the National Assembly favors the bill with majority, the bill will become effective for all public and private sector organizations of the federal capital territory.
“The employees of every establishment shall be provided six-month paid maternity and three-months paternity leave as and when applied by employees, separately from their leave account, commencing from the date as applied by the applicant in the application and supported by a medical certificate.”
The proposed bill was not favored by the Minister of Economic Affairs. He was said that the law allows 90 days maternity leave to female employees and male employees can go on leave for 48 days in a year. He opposed and said 3 month paternity leave is little too much and suggests to reduce it to 15 days.
