Since 2005, NADRA has blocked more than 40,000 CNICs that were issued to the citizens of other countries including India, Iran, Iraq, USA, China, Burma, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Morocco, Uzbekistan and Maldives.

According to Federal Interior Minister CH Nisar, NADRA has blocked overall 0.23 million ID cards in the last 5 years. These include CNIC issued to both foreigners and Pakistanis. According to officials, majority of these blocked ID cards were issued to ‘unregistered Afghan refugees’. At least 650 officials were involved in this illegal issuance of millions of ID cards which also include 108 only from a regional office in Karachi only.

According to official documents, these ID cards were issued to 40,000 Afghanis, 236 Iranians, 111 Bengali & Burmese, 29 Indians, 21 Chinese, 13 Egyptians, seven Moroccan, 3 Uzbeks, two Maldivians and 1 each to an American and a Senegal’s citizen.

It looks like that NADRA is taking an initiative through this step to eradicate the problem of terrorism and illegal immigrants that can change the society’s balance. But it is also known that there are flaws in the process and few legal Pakistani citizens also got their ID cards blocked and improvement is required for this process.
