Pakistan is making its best effort to develop such a system, which can encounter the stealing and snatching of the mobile phones. They want to develop such system and also introduce it in the market in order to control the criminal activities of the mobile phone snatching.
The government has already made the similar activity in 2008/09 when Dr Yaseen was the chairman. The efforts were useless and it could not get success due to the fact that the system was backed with the use of only IMEI numbers for blocking of phone. The IMEI numbers can be changed easily through the use of software and the system did not work to block the stolen or lost mobile phones before the deployment. Then different law enforcement agencies made the collaboration and these law enforcement agencies are included with intelligence agencies, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, and mobile phone companies gathered to figure out the possible computer system to develop this system and disable the stolen or lost mobile phones to work further. The local company made the contract with the concerned company for the purpose to deliver the solution to PTA.
They have designed the new system and showed how it would work for the stolen or lost mobile phones:
- PTA will maintain the list of the allowed IMEIs, which are imported legally and PTA approved IMEIs paired with the CINCs and they are allowed to register with the local networks.
- The owners of the mobile phones will be asked to get register the IMEI numbers with their SIM cards and the CNIC number are mapped with SIMs.
- When the mobile phone is lost or stolen, then it will be put in the blocking list.
- If the IMEI is put in the block list or IMEI is not matching with the registered SIM card number, it would not be allowed to connect with any network.
The statement was issued about the new software used for this system and when the software is ready to insert the SIM card, the IMEI number of the said mobile phone will be registered. In case of theft or loss, the subscribers will block the SIM and the mobile phone will also be blocked automatically.
This system will help to make the stealing and snatching of the mobile phone useless and the lost or stolen mobile phone will not be able to connect to any network and result in better situation to cope with the phone snatching and other related criminal activities.
