Geo Television Network has launched Geo News channel in November 2005 and the head office of the channel was set up in Karachi. Jang Group is the owner of this channel and its telecast Urdu news and entertainment along with current affair programs for its viewership around the world.

This channel has served remarkable services for the nation by providing national and international news and talk shows. Some of the talk shows got popularity among the people like Capital Talk, Aj Kamran Khan kay Sath, Jawab deyh and Jirgah. All these programs got popularity and a huge number of people like to watch these programs and get the update on the political issues. This channel has also face to imposition to this channel during state of emergency by the General Pervaiz Musaharraf in November 2007. The government banned all its news and entertainment programs with immediate effect claiminmg that this channel is creating negativism among the people and they were ordered not to telecast any program on their channel. The channel contacted with the Supreme Court against this decision but the government lifted this ban on January 21, 2008.
During the Lawyer’s movement for the restoration of the Chief Justice of Pakistan and the judges of the Supreme Court, this channel produced remarkable efforts and got success as a result of the restoration of the higher court. When the lawyer movement has called for the long march in the country, then government decided to impose ban on this channel on March 13, 2009. The relationships of this channel with the sitting government of Pakistan People Party were not exemplary so they decided to impose ban on the channel and stopped the transmissions of all four channels of this group in various parts of the country. The government also ordered the controlling authority to shift this channel on other numbers to avoid the criticism from various sides. For this decision, the Federal Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Sherry Rehman resigned from the Federal Cabinet, which was accepted hurriedly.
