Google Supporting Physical Security Keys for Login in Account

Google has just announced to launch support for an open standard for Google Logins – USB Security Key. It will replace the part of verification where a verification code is send to the user on the phone and now the user will verify his identity by inserting a physical device into computer.
It’s still a 2-factor authentication as it will come after entering password. Google has activated this free of charge on all Google accounts.
But this Security Key has limited effect as it will work only on the browsers of Chrome 38 or newer. Also, it will be difficult for the mobile internet operators to use this feature on their tablets or smartphones.
But there are lot of expectations from the Security Key as it is based on the open standard FIDO and as the verification mechanism, it isn’t limited to just USB. We know NFC token being used for sharing information, activating certain profiles and even used as cashless transactions. For verifications, NFC and Bluetooth tokens can also be used instead of USB.
For the same purpose, we can also use fingerprint and biometric scanners also. For security conscious individuals and organizations, the Security Key can also be extended to multiple steps instead of two steps.
Bur certainly a good thing is that we’re moving away from single passwords. It will make it lot harder for scammers and hackers.
